(Reuters) – Members of Amazon’s union workers voted to join the International Brotherhood of Truck Drivers, according to a joint statement issued on Tuesday, in the latest sign that unionization efforts are growing at the e-commerce giant.
ALU, the only union that officially represents Amazon.com (NASDAQ:) warehouse workers in the United States, agreed to join the Teamsters earlier this month, pending a vote by its members.
Why is it important
Joining forces with the Teamsters, a 1.3 million-member group and one of the largest labor unions in the United States, gives ALU more resources and stronger representation to negotiate contracts with the company.

“The Teamsters and ALU will fight fearlessly to ensure Amazon workers get the good jobs and safe working conditions they deserve in the union contract,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said.
Context
ALU scored a historic victory in April 2022 after workers at Amazon’s JFK8 facility in New York City’s Staten Island borough voted to join the union, the company’s first in the United States.
Teamsters, which created an internal Amazon division in 2021, has also been instrumental in helping American workers… United Parcel Service (NYSE:) got a more favorable contract last year.

The newly chartered ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Local 1 will represent approximately 5,500 Amazon warehouse workers at JFK8 and will have jurisdiction over Amazon warehouse workers across New York’s five boroughs, the statement said.
