Burger King has fallen to third place in the fast-casual burger business. That’s been the case for a few years now, and the chain has been trying to innovate a lot in order to catch up with Wendy’s and become what Pepsi is to Coca-Cola to McDonald’s.
In recent months, McDonald’s has received a lot of media attention for its embrace of value. The chain introduced a $5 meal that included a burger, chicken McNuggets, fries and a drink. This is a blatant imitation of Wendy’s. (where) The Biggie Bag costs $5, which the second brand indicated in a TV ad.

The $5 meal deal seems to be the go-to bet in fast food right now, but Restaurant Brands International (fast food restaurant) Burger King was late to the game. It added a $5 meal deal in June, which includes a choice of a Whopper Jr., a bacon cheeseburger or a small chicken burger, plus fries, four pieces of chicken and a drink.
It’s a better late than never deal, and the chain has advertised it widely, but the chain has gotten more attention for its innovation than its deals.
Many of Burger King’s innovations have involved the Whopper sandwich. The chain has leveraged its signature sandwiches in different versions ranging from simple additions like adding bacon and different sauces to the Whopper Melt line, which uses different types of bread and more cheese.
Now, the fast food giant has added a breakfast version of Whopper Melts to its morning menu.

Burger King has suffered.
Over the past year, Burger King has seen several franchisees declare bankruptcy and the chain lose hundreds of restaurants. Burger King’s U.S. sales were relatively flat, while total net restaurant sales fell 2%, resulting in a negative 0.8% decline in systemwide sales in the second quarter.
These are not results that CEO Joshua Kobza is happy with.
“The absolute sales and visits results at Burger King were clearly below what we had hoped for. But the business continued to outperform Burger’s quick service restaurant sales and visits. I believe this is largely due to our responsible approach to everyday value, our focus on meeting the needs of our guests and franchisees, and the impact of operational improvements that we are starting to see,” he said at the RBI meeting. “We introduced another $5 product this quarter, the $5 Your Way Meal, and balanced that with premium menu innovations like Melts and now our new Fiery Menu. There’s more we can do to enhance the value we offer. I think great operations, digitization and reimaging are equally important to winning in the long run,” he added.
