Many people find it difficult to keep up with appearances and keep up with others in a challenging economy. This can often lead to overspending, a habit that is difficult to break once you start.
Fifty-one percent of Americans Men admit to overspending to impress others, a trend that is more pronounced among younger generations and men. And at a time when household debt is at record levels, managing spending and budgeting has never been more important.

Many people are facing increasing costs but are unwilling to cut back on entertainment spending.
TheStreet sat down with personal finance expert Dave Ramsey to discuss the importance of self-awareness in managing money, especially debt. He shares stories from his own experience getting out of debt to help others do the same.
Creating a budget is half the battle.
Ramsay doesn’t hesitate when asked what behavioral changes debtors need to make.
“Most people don’t budget anything,” he said. “They have no idea where their money is going. So when you start being intentional about it, it’s a self-awareness exercise. Look at what we spend here on eating out.”

Ramsay points to the increasing reliance on seamless spending, primarily through online purchases.
“In fact, personal financial behavior is about 80 percent of money. Math or mental knowledge is only 20 percent. But what happens is that we start spending money that we don’t have. We feel trapped or we feel like we have to keep up or we keep hitting the Amazon Prime button over and over and buying unnecessary things.”
“It’s all about self-awareness,” Ramsay continued. “One of the things that happened to me when I was in my 20s was that I was broke and I lost everything. Through that experience, I looked in the mirror and saw the problem. It was me. I was the idiot; I was the problem.”
On the positive side, Ramsay emphasizes that you have control over your future. It’s never too late for those in debt to improve their financial situation.
“The good news is that I found the solution too. I can change that tomorrow. Only I can decide. I will not spend money I no longer have,” he said.

Cutting spending is a short-term sacrifice with a long-term return.
Despite increased personal income, McKinsey found that consumers plan to cut back on “extravagant” purchases due to a lack of disposable income.

“One of the people in one of our groups said, ‘I think I figured out why we don’t have money in retirement when we did our budget. I think we’re burning through it.’ And that’s exactly right. They go out to eat every night,” Ramsay explained.

“I’m not against restaurants,” he said. “I love restaurants. But you can’t go out to eat every night if you’re broke. So again, all of this stuff is about self-awareness so you can put your finger on something really important there.”
However, low disposable income does not always prevent people from living above their income level; Half of adults in the United States Carry credit card debt monthly.
Ramsey points out that sometimes, an honest, brutal approach is needed to help others take control of their finances.
“People call it tough love, but the truth is I love you enough to tell you the truth, and no one else would,” he said. “And sometimes that seems tough to people, but it’s not tough. I actually care deeply about you getting that.”
“When I sat down and budgeted on a yellow notepad, I realised I was spending a lot of money on what other people would see. I bought watches I couldn’t afford so people would see me wearing them. I drove a Jaguar because I cared what people thought about what I was driving,” he added.
“I used to care too much about what other people thought. I no longer drive cars based on what other people think. I drive a car that I love. Now, it’s a nice car, but what you think of my car doesn’t matter to me. When you stop caring about what other people think, you’ll suddenly find yourself on the road to wealth.”
