One quantitative analyst pointed out how trends in BitMEX exchange reserves have affected the price of Ethereum over the past few years.
BitMEX Ethereum whales have shown intelligent financial behavior in recent years
In CryptoQuant Quicktake mailOne analyst discussed a pattern in BitMEX’s ETH exchange reserve. the “Exchange reserve“Here refers to an on-chain metric that tracks the total amount of Ethereum held in the wallets of any given central exchange.
When the value of this metric rises, investors will make net deposits into the platform at the moment. Since one of the main reasons investors turn to exchanges is for selling purposes, this trend may have potential downward effects on the price of the asset.
On the other hand, a decrease in the index indicates that the net amount of cryptocurrency supply is moving out of wallets linked to the exchange. Investors generally place their coins into self-custody when they plan to hold them for long periods, so this could be an upside for the coin.
Now, here’s a chart showing the trend in BitMEX’s Ethereum exchange reserve over the past few years:
As can be seen in the chart above, the Ethereum exchange reserve on the BitMEX platform saw a sharp increase in mid-2022. This would indicate that investors have made some huge net deposits on the exchange.
According to the quantity, the platform includes a large number of WhalesSo this huge inflow activity would reflect the behavior of these huge investors.
Interestingly, the rapid growth in the index came right before ETH crashed into it. Alcoholic market Lowest levels. Thus, it seems possible that these large shareholders anticipated that things were about to get worse for the asset, so they pulled the trigger on a sale while they still had the chance.
Another notable shift in BitMEX’s exchange reserve occurred in September 2023, when whales scooped up a large amount of Ethereum, almost completely tracking the previous bear market surge.
From the chart, it appears that shortly after these net outflows occurred, the price of the cryptocurrency began a sharp rise that would eventually take it above the $4,000 level for the first time since December 2021.
It seems that these smart money whales were once again right in their intuition about the market, as they were able to time their purchases at the right time for the rally.
Since these net inflows in September, the index has not shown any major shifts, with its value moving sideways. Given the historical trend, any new deviations may be worth monitoring, as they could lead to another shift for Ethereum.
