The state of Louisiana has drafted pro-crypto legislation that seeks to ban central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) while supporting Bitcoin mining.
This new legislation, called Blockchain Basics Lawwill be activated in August 2024. It provides clear definitions for node operators while supporting Bitcoin mining activities.

The law also protects the right to self-custody, ensuring that individuals are able to hold digital assets. It also seeks to ensure that individuals and businesses are able to accept and spend Bitcoin legally.
Representative Mark Wright, who sponsored the legislation, noted that it “will pave the way in Louisiana for the changes and economic opportunities we will see from blockchain technology and digital assets.”
Louisiana Bans Central Bank Coins (CBDCs).
This amendment also includes a provision that prohibits state central bank digital currencies. It prohibits state governments from engaging in testing central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) or accepting payments using CBDCs.
However, it does not impose a ban on other digital currencies. According to Wright, the goal was to ensure that digital assets were protected and legally recognized.
Louisiana’s ban on central bank digital currencies follows similar actions taken by states like Florida and North Carolina. Central bank digital currencies have also become a crucial topic in the ongoing US presidential election, with former US President Donald Trump saying The digital dollar was a “dangerous threat to freedom.”
