China has successfully extradited a suspect, known only by his surname Zhang, from Thailand. Zhang is accused of orchestrating a vast pyramid scheme involving cryptocurrencies that netted billions of dollars. The case marks the first financial criminal extradition between China and Thailand under an agreement in place since 1999.
Zhang’s extradition: A landmark case in financial crimes
Zhang is alleged to have been the ringleader of a pyramid scheme called the “MBI Group,” which began operations in 2012. Through the scheme, Zhang reportedly attracted more than 10 million members by offering memberships that promised high returns. These memberships were sold for fees ranging from 700 yuan ($98) to 245,000 yuan ($34,300) and were tied to the issuance of cryptocurrencies. The total amount of money involved in the fraudulent activity is said to have exceeded 100 billion yuan, or about $14 billion.
Ministry of Public Security of China Zhang’s arrest was reportedly the result of cooperation between Chinese and Thai authorities, known as the “Fox Hunt” task force. Zhang was handed over to Chinese authorities on Wednesday after being extradited from Thailand. Zhang’s case has received significant attention because it is the first financial crime to result in extradition under the China-Thailand treaty since its implementation.
Investigations into Zhang’s activities first began in Chongqing, a major city in southwest China, in November 2020. In March 2021, the Chinese branch of Interpol issued a red notice for Zhang, making him wanted across international borders. Zhang was subsequently arrested in Thailand in July 2022. A Thai court eventually ruled in May this year that Zhang should be extradited to China.
Despite China’s ban on Cryptocurrency trading In 2021, many investors continued to look for ways to circumvent restrictions. In one notable case, Chinese authorities uncovered a secret banking operation in May that involved at least 13.8 billion yuan ($1.9 billion) in transactions. The illegal network used the USDT stablecoin Foreign exchange.
In an attempt to combat the increasing use of Cryptocurrencies in illegal activitiesChinese legal authorities have recently expanded their definition of money laundering. Earlier this week, China’s top judicial institutions included the use of cryptocurrencies to transfer illicit funds in their legal interpretation. The shift should make it easier for law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute crypto-related money laundering cases.
