Popular retailer closes all stores after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Higher interest rates, shifting consumer demand, and the debt burden of the COVID-19 pandemic have created a bleak situation for many retailers. Larger chains like Macy’s, which has closed hundreds of locations, have the financial muscle to reorganize their businesses.

Smaller retailers, even once-successful regional chains, have not been so lucky. You can’t change your business model without cash, and capital markets have become tight.

These reasons (among others) have led to the bankruptcy of companies like Olympia Sports and Models—two brands with deep roots in the communities they serve. Additionally, Sam Ash, a beloved music chain that invited musicians to test its products, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is in the process of closing all of its stores.

At least Sam Ash will survive as a website under new owners. Another bankrupt company, Bed Bath and Beyond, has been revived by the former Overstock.com, but many of these once-popular brands have fallen victim to a combination of circumstances that may have been beyond their control.

Now, shortly after declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 18, another popular regional chain with a long history will close its doors, presumably for good.

Bob’s stores faced a bleak future.

Bob’s Stores Inc., which shares a parent company with Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 18 in federal court in Delaware. According to the company’s filing, the company has 369 creditors, as well as assets ranging from $50 million to $100 million and a similar amount in liabilities.

At the time, the company didn’t share much information publicly, but it did file a notice with the state of Connecticut, where it is headquartered, saying it had been unable to meet its obligations to employees.

“We would have liked to have given you additional notice of this action but were unable to do so because the bank informed us over the past week that it would refuse to fund employee health insurance premiums, 401k administration, payroll, and other critical financial obligations that, if not paid, would likely prevent us from being able to operate business in the future,” Bob’s and EMS President David Barton wrote in a letter to the state Department of Labor on May 21.

Despite that message, there was some hope that at least some stores could be saved or that a buyer would emerge for the retail brands serving New England, New York and New Jersey.

Bob’s stores will close as part of the bankruptcy process.

Any hopes of reviving or saving Bob were dashed at the last minute when the company shared a press release on July 2 saying the brand would be shutting down.

“Bob’s Stores will close all of its Bob’s locations and liquidate all inventory, as part of its Chapter 11 restructuring petition filed on June 18, 2024. Despite making rapid and aggressive changes to the company’s structure and operations, Bob’s Stores has been unable to secure the financing necessary to sustain operations,” the company said.

Nothing is mentioned about emergency medical services and Diving into retail We tried to contact the company (which no longer has contact information on its website) but the request was not answered.

“Bob’s will begin offering in-store sales on Friday, June 28, with discounts ranging from 30% to 70%,” according to the press release.

Dave Barton, the president of Bob’s, expressed regret at not being able to find a way forward.

“We regret that our financial situation has necessitated the liquidation of Bob’s stores. Bob’s has been a mainstay in our local communities for nearly 70 years, and we know our customers remember us as being there for important moments in their lives,” he shared.

Hilco Merchant Resources, in a joint venture with Gordon Brothers, will manage the liquidation sale, which will include all Bob’s stores throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. In addition to the sale of the chain’s regular inventory, select store fixtures, furniture and equipment will also be sold.
