IMPORTANT NOTE: Any information in this post regarding selling Ether is very outdated and possibly inaccurate. Please refer only to the latest blog posts and official materials on ethereum.org for information about the sale
Ethereum received an amazing response at the Miami Bitcoin Conference. We traveled there expecting many technical questions as well as a philosophical discussion about the purpose of Ethereum; However, the tremendous amount of interest and enthusiasm for the project was much greater than we expected. Vitalik’s presentation was met with a standing ovation and a queue of questions that took hours to answer.
As we intend to provide equal opportunities to all those who wish to participate, and we are reviewing the relevant logistical and organizational issues for a symbolic sale of this size, we have decided to postpone the launch of the sale on February 1st. We will announce the launch date of the new sale on our official website: Ethereum.org.
The Ethereum project is also pleased to announce the alpha release of an open source testnet client for the community at the beginning of February. This will give people the opportunity to participate in the project, experiment with Ethereum scripts and contracts, and gain a better understanding of the technical features of the Ethereum platform. Launching the testnet on this date will give those interested in fundraising a chance to better understand what the Ethereum project is about before participating.
The testnet will include full support for sending and receiving transactions, an initial version of the scripting language as described in our whitepaper, and may or may not include mining. This will also be the first major cryptocurrency project to release two official clients at the same time, one written in C++ and the other in Go; A Python client is also in the works. A compiler of the Ethereum CLL script to Ethereum will be released very soon.
A note about security
The Ether sale will not be launched on February 1st and any attempt to raise funds at this time should be considered a scam. There have been some scams on the forums, so please be careful and only consider information posted on Ethereum.org as legitimate. It is important to stress to everyone that only information published and posted on Ethereum.org should be trusted, as many are likely to impersonate us.
