In Southeast Asia, the problem of illegal Bitcoin mining has been on the rise, with operators taking advantage of the region’s relatively low electricity costs. This problem was most recently highlighted in Thailand, where authorities carried out a raid on an illegal Bitcoin mining operation located in Ratchaburi, a town west of Bangkok. The raid was launched in response to numerous complaints from local residents who were experiencing frequent and unexplained power outages.

The raid reportedly took place on August 23, and revealed that unlicensed mining activities may have been responsible for the power outage that has plagued the area for more than a month. The investigation into the disturbances began after residents began reporting mysterious power outages, which they first noticed in mid-July.
Continuous power outages have raised concerns within Regional Electricity Authority (PEA)who then teamed up with local police to determine the source of the excessive power consumption. Their efforts led them to one home that was consuming an unusual amount of electricity. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that this home was being used as a base for Bitcoin mining operations.
Jamnong Channong, the area’s chief security officer, noted that while electricity consumption at the property was abnormally high, payments for electricity were suspiciously low. This discrepancy suggests that the operators may have been stealing power to support their mining activities. The mining equipment was found to have been installed by a company that had rented the house for about four months. The timeline for the major power outages coincided with the period when the mining operation was likely to be fully operational.
Despite the raid, no arrests have been made, with authorities believing the operators fled after realizing their activities had attracted the attention of law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing.
Concerns grow over electricity theft in Southeast Asia’s cryptocurrency mining industry
