The frontier is coming – what to expect, and how to prepare

We are just days away from the launch of Frontier, the first milestone in the launch of the Ethereum project. Frontier will be followed by Homestead, Metropolis, and Serenity throughout the next year, each adding new features and improving the ease of use and security of the platform.

    What are the limits?

Frontier is a straightforward but barebones implementation of the Ethereum project. It is intended for technical users, especially developers. During the release of Frontier, we expect early adopters and app developers to create communities and begin to form a living ecosystem. Like their counterparts across the American frontier, these settlers will be given tremendous opportunities, but they will also face many dangers. If building from source interfaces and command lines isn’t your cup of tea, we highly encourage you to wait for a more user-friendly version of the Ethereum software before diving in.

    When will Frontier be live?

Frontier is now feature complete and its code base has been frozen for two weeks. As a team, we are currently reviewing the final steps of the release, and not all of them are technical. There will be no countdown – Ethereum is not something that is centrally “released,” but instead emerges from consensus. Users will have to voluntarily download and run a specific version of the software, then create and upload a Genesis block to join the official project network. Details about this process will be published soon.

What can we expect at Frontier?

Initial “melt”: Gas limits during the first few days

The first release of Frontier will have a built-in gas limit per block of 5,000 gas. Unlike the normal gas-per-block parameter, this special limit will not grow proportionally with network usage – effectively preventing transactions from taking place during the first few days. This “thaw” period will enable miners to begin operations and early adopters to install their clients without having to “rush.” After a few days (likely 3-4 days, but this may change), we will release a small software update that all customers will need to install. This update will see the per-block gas limit raised to 3 million, an initial number that will be scaled up or down depending on the miner’s default settings.

    Errors, issues and complications

We are very happy with how the “Olympic” testing phase of the Ethereum test network is shaping up. However, the work on Frontier is far from over. Expect weekly updates that will give you access to better and more stable clients. Several planned border issues (which included resetting the chain at Homestead, limiting mining rewards to 10%, and centralized checkpoints) were deemed unnecessary. However, there are still significant differences between Frontier and Homestead. At Frontier, we’ll have issues, we’ll get updates, and there will be bugs — users take their chances when using the software. There will be big (big) warning messages before developers can install it. In Frontier, documentation is limited, and the tools available require advanced technical skills.

    Canary contracts

Canary contracts are simple toggle switches that carry a value equal to 0 or 1. Each contract is controlled by a different member of the Eth/Dev team and will update to “1” if the internal Frontier Disaster Recovery Team reports an agreed-upon issue, such as a fork.

Within each Frontier Client, a check is performed after each block against 4 contracts. If the value of two out of four of these contracts is converted from 0 to 1, mining stops and a message is displayed urging the user to update their client. This is to prevent “fire and forget” miners from blocking the chain upgrade.

This process is centralized and will only run for the duration of the border. It helps prevent the risk of prolonged power outages (24 hours+).

    Stats, Status and Badblock locations

You’re probably familiar with our network statistics monitor, https://stats.ethdev.com/. It provides a quick overview of network health, block resolution time, and gas statistics. If you want to explore it further, I’ve got you covered Brief video Explain the different key performance indicators. Remember that participation in the stats page is voluntary, and nodes are required to do so They add themselves before appearing on the plate.

In addition to the stats page, we will have a status page https://status.ethdev.com/ (There is no link because the site is not yet live) which will give a brief overview of any issue that may affect Frontier. Use it as your first port of call if you think something may not be right.

Finally, if any clients receive an invalid ban, they will refuse to process it and send it to the bad ban site (AKA ‘Sentinel’). This could mean something is wrong, or something more serious, such as a fork. Either way, this process will alert our developers to potential issues on the network. The site itself is public and available on https://badblocks.ethdev.com (Currently running on testnet).

    Clean testnet

Over the past couple of months, the Ethereum testnet has been pushed to its limits in order to test scalability and block deployment times. As part of this testing, we encouraged users to spam the network with transactions, contract creation codes, and contract communication, sometimes amounting to more than 25 transactions per second. This has caused the testnet chain to grow to a somewhat unwieldy size, making it difficult for new users to catch up. That’s why, shortly after Frontier is released, there will be a new testnet that follows the same rules as Frontier.

    Distribution of Olympic rewards

During the Olympic phase there were a number of rewards for various achievements including mining prowess. Many of you participated and were rewarded – special mention to PhiStr90, Dino and Samuel Lavery for their help during the stress tests. Note that the rewards will not be part of the Frontier Genesis block, but will instead be distributed by the foundation bot over the weeks following release.

How do I get started with Frontier?

    Tools

Frontier and all its dependencies will be made available as a one-line installer on our website at https://www.ethereum.org/. A single line installer will be provided for OSX, Linux, and Windows. Of course, more advanced users will still be able to install everything From the sourceOr use binary structure from our file Automated construction robots.

Once Frontier is installed on their devices, users will need to create a Genesis block themselves, then upload it to their Frontier clients. Text and instructions on how to do this will be provided as part of the new Ethereum website, as well as our various wikis.

We are often asked how existing users will switch from the testnet to the livenet: This will be done through a switch in the geth console (–Network address). By default, the new version will aim to connect to the live network, and to switch back to the test network, you will simply indicate the network ID as “0”.

    documents

To get started with Ethereum, the best place is our administrator gitbook. After consulting gitbook, you can search the administrator Hardness tutorial. For more in-depth information, please refer to Main wiki, Go to the client wiki And C++ client wiki. Finally, if it’s mining you want to know more about, a FAQ and Mining Guide It is updated regularly on our forums.

    Get help

Ethereum is an open source software project, and as such, all help is provided through community channels. If you encounter problems, your first port of call should be our website Forumsfollowed by our Ethereum chat Channels. If, on the other hand, you are experiencing issues with your Ether selling wallet, such as not being able to load your purchases before selling, Help desk address It will continue to operate across the border (and perhaps beyond).

Of course, you can also find help locally at one of our centers 115 meetings Worldwide – If your city isn’t on the list, we encourage you to do so Make one.
