The political landscape in the United States could look very different when markets reopen on Monday.
All kinds of rumors and reports have spread following Biden’s disastrous debate performance. The main rumors are that Biden and his team plan to continue, but I don’t see any evidence of that – people always want to continue.
The question now is whether there are enough senior Democratic officials and interested donors who can persuade him to withdraw.
One report that caught my eye was from Doug Kass, a financial executive and not a reporter but with a grain of truth.
What I’m hearing about Joe Biden. Ron Klain and Barack Obama are sitting down with the president today. Jill Biden is insisting Joe should run. Kamala is upset that she wasn’t considered as an alternative (and so are Whitmer and Newsom). Interestingly, my neighbor in East Hampton is hosting the Bidens tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if the fundraiser is canceled.
Ron Klain was Biden’s former chief of staff.
I think if you read between the lines on a comment like that from Nancy Pelosi, it’s certainly disturbing.
“The President of the United States has been a great president. He’s had a bad start. I thought it came out okay.“
This is not a ringing endorsement.
The problem is: If he drops out, what happens next? All eyes will be on Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer, but can you just drop a candidate without anyone voting? That’s definitely problematic.
